NEW PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL
Liana Hawkins
Liana will be attending Boston University, majoring in biology with a focus on behavioral biology. Early on, she knew she wanted to dedicate her life to healthcare and volunteerism. A Doctors without Borders map hung in her room for inspiration and as a reminder of her goals.
She started volunteering during her freshman year of high school at Overlook Hospital and realized how important all the behind-the-scenes work is — from processing forms, delivering specimens to the lab and wheeling patients out to go home. In her junior year, Liana joined the New Providence Rescue Squad as a cadet. She is certified in basic life support and first aid. Soon, she’ll also be volunteering at St. Hubert’s Animal Shelter in Madison, NJ.
She says, she’d never be fully satisfied in life without the purpose of serving others.
Derek Estrada
Derek will be attending Albright College. He feels very fortunate to be able to help others and received a proclamation from New Providence Mayor, Al Morgan, for his selfless service to others and his volunteer work with Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (CCFA). He’s a team captain for the organization’s annual walk and was the designated speaker in 2015.
Since 6th grade, he’s given his time to the annual NJ Sharing Network walk as well. For three years during high school, he mentored children with special needs through sports activities. During the annual Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt, Derek helps with set up, hiding the eggs and helping participants.
He’s happy to make even the smallest difference in someone’s life.
